My Uncle Is Not Pablo Escobar
My Uncle Is Not Pablo Escobar, also known as LatinXcluded
Who We Are:
My Uncle Is Not Pablo Escobar, created by LatinXcluded, has existed since 2019, using the arts and organising as a vehicle to amplify and win campaigns for the rights of Latinx people and make visible the 8th largest community in the UK.
What’s the problem?
There is a lack of visibility and recognition for the Latin American community in the UK. We face racism, a hostile environment and a lack of access to statutory services.
How are we solving it?
My Uncle is not Pablo Escobar, which has two arms, one focusing on the arts and the other on community organising. We have organised 2 runs of the incredibly successful My Uncle Is Not Pablo Escobar where ‘stereotypes about London’s Latinx community are well and truly subverted’.
We also formed the LatinX community forum, which aimed to offer space for connection, mutual education, and support for Latin American organisations and the community. After the most recent run of the festival in early 2026, we will be restrategising on what comes next in our organising work!
Campaign wins
Latinxcluded was a campaign formed out of the frustration with the fact that there wasn’t a Latin American box to tick on the ethnicity question when applying to university on UCAS forms meaning students would have to tick ‘other’. It was quickly realised that this problem reached far higher than UCAS itself. It still isn’t an option to tick on the UK census Latin American.
Adding Latin American to the UK census will enable better data and knowledge about the Latin American population, improve their access to statutory services, and increase visibility and awareness of Latin American communities.
Latinxcluded has campaigned successfully for Kings College, Lambeth council and with the Arts Council to add this to their monitoring forms and data collection efforts.
How can I help?
Although we have come a long way in starting to get Latin American visibility and recognition in the UK, there is still no box on the UK census for Latin Americans. We are still fighting this fight!
