Sam

Pronouns: He/Him
Membership timeline: 2018-present

Through Re.Rooted, and The Advocacy Academy’s campaign on Decolonising the Curriculum, Sam has pushed for global perspectives on British History to be embedded into the KS3 curriculum. He’s worked on building teacher networks and developing grassroots resources to bring stories of migration and colonialism into classrooms, and his engagement with the 2025 national curriculum review led to a response from Secretary for Education, Bridget Phillipson, signalling promise for the future of this work.

“The Advocacy Academy were instrumental in the building blocks for our campaign … In terms of actually forming a campaign and learning what it takes to make a successful movement and to make successful change, The Advocacy Academy provided the framework for that kind of work.”

Sam credits The Advocacy Academy for being a community that continued to support him beyond the programme – helping with university applications, job support, and providing a safe space for young people to explore their identity, and stay connected.

“There’s an ongoing conversation about the need and importance of Third Spaces … A liberation centre can provide that … A dedicated space for young people to engage in critical learning, community activities, and community building is super important.”

“The Advocacy Academy were there talking about making changes and being part of change. They were doing the work, and not just talking about it and moving on. That inspired me. I wanted to be someone that was actually mobilising, trying to create change, and make waves.”
