Buy Back Brixton

Bringing Cultural Assets Into Community Ownership

Who we Are: Brixton Traders Community Association (BTCA) & The Advocacy Academy (TAA)

Context:

Brixton Village and Market Row are the proud heart of our community. For years, they have been a place for local residents to come together in one of the UK’s most culturally significant and diverse markets.

For the past two years, BTCA and TAA have been working together to develop strategy, secure partnerships and raise the funds needed to bring Brixton Village and Market Row into community ownership and democratic stewardship. This would ensure that local traders, residents, young people, immigrants and the communities that created the social, cultural and economic wealth that distinguishes Brixton Markets would democratically own & steward this significant community asset.

The progress:

On June 22nd, we submitted our historic community bid for the purchase of Brixton Village and Market Row with the help of community members who donated to our crowdfund, and institutional donors.

To our knowledge this would be the largest ever commercial asset to be brought into community ownership in the UK’s history.

How can I help?

1.
Chip in if you can to help us purchase the markets. Donate here

2. Celebrate with us at our next street rally! September 16th, 5:30-8PM on Brixton Station Road

3. Shop in the market. The traders have run their businesses through all of this! If you need to buy something, do it locally.
